Week 6: Programmatic Sound Control

Knowing how to create a sound object is interesting but the ability to control sound through the use of Actionscript will open up a number of possibilities. Whether it be gaming or cueing sound playback, the ability to control sound is key to enriching the user experience.

This lesson will consist of two parts. The first will show you how use the sliders, knobs and buttons that ship with Flash to create a volume control, a pan control and start and stop buttons. This small exercise will also show you to "stream" a sound into Flash.

In the second part, we will be bouncing a basketball in the car park outside of the Seaport Conference Center in Boston. To make this a little more realistic we will pay attention to detail. For example as you bounce the ball further away from the Conference Center the ball should get smaller and the sound should get fainter. As well, we will be managing the sound by identifying an area of the screen for the action and dynamically controlling both the volume and the pan of the sound as the bouncing ball is dragged around the screen.
